Press Release

Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to announce the opening of their exhibition, "Ellsworth Kelly: Spectrums, 1953-1972", which is scheduled to run from April 13 through June 26, 1999, Tuesday through Saturday. "Ellsworth Kelly: Spectrums" will be the first survey devoted specifically to the artist's seminal Spectrum works which spanned nearly two decades of development and will mark the first time that the majority of Spectrum paintings and all of the collages will be viewed together. Kelly first examined issues of spectral color in both oil and collage works during his formative years in Paris in 1953. He subsequently returned to the Spectrum concept more than a decade later and continued to explore the motif until 1972 in increasingly complex ways in terms of facture and size. Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to present all the studies and finished paintings which have been united through generous loans directly from the artist, private collectors and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. A fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by David Batchelor and 14 color illustrations will accompany the exhibition and will be available through the Gallery. This exhibition is held in collaboration with the Matthew Marks Gallery.
