Press Release

Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to announce their forthcoming exhibition, "Leon Kossoff: Recent Paintings and Drawings", which is scheduled to run from April 11 through May 24, 2000, Tuesday through Saturday. "Leon Kossoff" will feature the first works to leave the artist's studio since his major retrospective at the Tate Gallery in London in 1996 and his representation of England at the 1995 Venice Biennale. It is Kossoff's first solo exhibition in the United States in over ten years. Born in 1926, Leon Kossoff has been described as one of the greatest British artists of the past four decades. He grew up in the East End of London and has lived in the city all his life. The changing face of London's urban landscape has been a recurring subject of his work, as he has returned to paint and draw particular places from the metropolis where he was born. Most recently he has produced a powerful new series on King's Cross Station and Pentonville Road, which will feature in the exhibition. The human figure also continues to be a major preoccupation and the exhibition will contain two of the largest double nude figure paintings Kossoff has produced. For over forty years the artist has painted a limited range of subjects, mostly members of his own family, close friends and a small number of models of long acquaintance. These works are deeply moving evocations of the human presence. He is an artist who enjoys working directly with his material building up his thickly layered, almost sculptural, paintings in a deep emotional response to the real and visible world as he experiences it. A fully illustrated catalogue with an interview with the artist by Klaus Kertess will accompany the exhibition and will be available through the Gallery. This is the artist's first published interview. The exhibition has been organized with the co-operation of the L.A, Louver Gallery, Los Angeles, and will travel to Annely Juda Fine Art in London immediately after its New York showing (June 1-July 22, 2000). Concurrent with the exhibition, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is exhibiting a suite of fourteen etchings and drypoints which they have recently acquired. The Metropolitan exhibition will be on view from March 28 through August 13, 2000.
