VELLUMS March 21 - April 21, 2001 Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to announce the opening of their exhibition "Willem de Kooning: Vellums" which is scheduled to run from March 21 through April 21, 2001. This exhibition provides a focused study of de Kooning's working process over a nearly fifteen-year period from the mid-sixties to the early-eighties. Beginning as early as 1946, de Kooning utilized the act of drawing to embellish his painting process and referenced his drawings in his paintings. By the early-seventies, de Kooning employed a system of tracing his own paintings onto sheets of vellum. Occasionally, the resultant images would become the underdrawing for other paintings. In this manner, de Kooning kept a catalogue of forms which would often be repeated, although in different alignments, in many different works. On view for the first time will be a selection of 7-10 large-scale drawings from the estate of the artist, spanning a period from 1966 to 1983. These works will be supplemented with additional related drawings and paintings from the same period. Concurrent with the exhibition at the gallery, "Willem de Kooning: In Process," curated by Klaus Kertess and organized by the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, will be on view at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. This exhibition also focuses on the artist's working processes and will be on view from March 31 – May 28, 2001. A fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Brenda Richardson will accompany the exhibition and will be available through the Gallery. An opening night reception will take place at Mitchell-Innes & Nash on March 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Matthew Marks Gallery, New York.
