For the 2016 Independent Art Fair, New York, Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to present a solo booth with works by Pope.L.
The booth, comprised of a selection of paintings and one large sculpture, includes work spanning almost a decade of Pope.L’s career.
A selection of paintings on both canvas board and paper are extensions of the artist’s project entitled Skin Set: an ongoing set of text-based drawings, paintings and objects which describe the actions, attributes or ways of life of differently colored persons. Expanding beyond “Black” and “White,” the Skin set includes Orange, Green, Purple, Brown, Yellow, Red, gold, gray, beige and chartreuse people. As a group, the works engage language playfully with deliberately mixed, layered and slathered messages. Language has long been one of Pope.Ls preferred tools with which to create. The Skin Set is comprised of claims, spurts and gushes of language which function as a sort of Odyssean system of circuitry that is always in flux.
Coffin (Flag Box) is a wooden sculpture which stands about 45 inches tall. The L shaped coffin emits the recorded sound of a flag waving or shedding or burning.
