Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to announce the opening of their exhibition "Tony Smith: Paintings and Sculpture, 1960-65," which is scheduled to run from April 26 through June 23, 2001. "Tony Smith" is the first collaborative exhibition between Mitchell-Innes & Nash and Matthew Marks Gallery and marks our representation of the Estate of the artist. The exhibition will examine in depth the relationship between Smith’s painting and sculpture from the early sixties. While teaching at the Pratt Institute of Art in New York and at Bennington College, Vermont in the late fifties and early sixties, Tony Smith turned his attention toward developing a geometric language expressed through sculpture. During the same period, Smith translated this language into the two-dimensional, using painting to examine the interplay between space and form. On view will be approximately 10 paintings and 8-10 small-scale sculpture. These works will be supplemented with additional related drawings from the period. A fully illustrated catalogue with an introduction by the artist Richard Tuttle, who once worked as a studio assistant for Smith, will accompany the exhibition and will be available through the Gallery.
