Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by New York-based artist Jacolby Satterwhite, We Are In Hell When We Hurt Each Other. This exhibition, which marks the artist’s first show with the gallery, will include a new, large-scale virtual reality installation as well as new works in a variety of mediums including sculpture, photography, neon and mixed-medium installation.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is the debut of Satterwhite's most recent immersive, virtual reality video installation, We Are In Hell When We Hurt Each Other. In the video, after which the exhibition takes its title, the current events of our present reality permeate Satterwhite's quasi-utopic universe. This virtual world is rooted in the expression of Satterwhite's body movements, which are modeled and transcribed through digital bodysuits into animated fembot form. Current events permeate his virtual space that posits a post-pandemic, post-revolution world in which Black CGI female figures rooted in the artist's body movements use ritual and movement as tools of resistance.
For over a decade, Satterwhite has used 3D animation, sculpture, performance, painting and photography to create fantastical, labyrinthine universes. Exploring the themes of public space, the body, ritual and allegory, Satterwhite draws from myriad references including Italian Baroque painting, ‘90s video games, Modernism and artworks by his mother Patricia. Patricia’s drawings and recordings have had a significant influence on Satterwhite’s work, serving as a foundation for his otherworldly works. In 2019, Satterwhite released an LP with artist Nick Weiss, Love Will Find a Way Home, in which recordings by Patricia were overlaid onto dance tracks.

Each semester CCS Bard hosts a program of lectures by leading artists, curators, art historians, and critics, situating the school and museum’s concerns within the larger context of contemporary art production and discourse. Lectures are open to students and faculty, as well as to the general public, and will also be documented through video and/or audio recordings, which will reside in the CCS Bard Library and Archives. This talk is co-presented with the Africana Studies Program and Film and Electronic Arts Program at Bard College. Jacolby Satterwhite is celebrated for a conceptual practice addressing crucial themes of labor, consumption, carnality and fantasy through immersive installation, virtual reality and digital media.
The multimedia artist Jacolby Satterwhite’s magnificent first show at Mitchell-Innes & Nash in October was an engulfing sci-fi pastoral that included a large digital video projection densely populated with sexy androgynous avatars and other groups of creatures and humans performing Mr. Satterwhite’s angular choreography, smashing disco-ball meteorites or just standing around looking cool.

Patricia was the first member of the Satterwhite family you met upon entering the Chelsea location of Mitchell-Innes & Nash. You heard her singing over the speakers and saw her handwriting transcripted into bright neon signs and handwritten notes hung with archival care. You interacted with Patricia’s ideas before you saw the work of her son Jacolby, whose innovative work in sculpture, video, and music transferred Patricia’s visions into the digital age in his recent exhibition We Are in Hell When We Hurt Each Other.
“We Are In Hell When We Hurt Each Other,” Jacolby Satterwhite’s latest solo exhibition at Mitchell-Innes and Nash, marks a beginning, a continuation, and an ending for the 34-year-old Brooklyn-based artist. It is Satterwhite’s first show with the gallery. But this new body of work represents the third and final iteration of a sprawling, five-year project for him: a concept album that fuses visual and sonic elements through performance, video, virtual reality, drawing, and sculpture. Satterwhite’s genre-transcending work has always been ahead of its time. But now, released during this period of social isolation, civic unrest, and technological transformation, it has never felt more appropriately of the moment.
