The leading modern and contemporary art gallery, Mitchell-Innes & Nash, is pleased to announce their exhibition of 20th century sculpture. Sculpture will be on view at the Madison Avenue gallery through May and June, 2002.

The exhibition’s impressive selection of sculpture includes freestanding and table-top pieces as well as installations on the floor and walls. The 15 works on view provide a visual record of several different periods of 20th century art, including Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Pop. Sculpture features artworks composed of a wide range of media, including bronze, slate, stone, wood, paper maché and iron. Documenting the changes in three-dimensional art over the last century, the exhibition provides a rare opportunity to trace aesthetic developments and witness some of the best works of modern and contemporary sculpture in one setting.

The artworks on view span sixty years: the earliest sculpture in the exhibition is Henry Moore’s Seated Girl from 1931 and the most recent work is Kiki Smith’s Untitled (Head: Nose Bleed) from 1991. Other featured artists include world-renowned sculptors Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Nancy Graves and Tony Smith, as well as unusual pieces by artists perhaps better known through their paintings, including Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein and Joan Mirò. Sculpture brings these diverse artists together and juxtaposes pieces by artists rarely shown together.

Highlights include early examples of Minimalist work by Carl Andre, Dan Flavin and Donald Judd; a sixty-three piece installation in iron by Louise Bourgeois; an early representational piece by David Smith; and a stone work by Richard Long. Each piece gains a new freshness when presented in relation to the other works on view.
